About Neuro Rehabilitation

Neurorehabilitation is a special type of physiotherapy designed specifically for individuals recovering from and living with neurological disorders of the brain, spinal cord and nervous system  stroke, spinal cord injury, Parkinson’s disease, traumatic brain injury, multiple sclerosis and other similar conditions. Unlike ordinary physiotherapy, it is based on the retraining of the nervous system and helps re-learning movement patterns such as walking, balance, transfer, instead of building strength of muscles or joints.

In Satvik Rehab Nest, this kind of therapy is provided in-house as opposed to clinics since neurorehabilitation requires consistency of practice and the same environment where a person functions  patient’s stairs, bathroom, daily schedule etc.

When Should You Consider Therapy?

The right time to start neuro rehabilitation is as soon as the patient is medically stable immediately after a stroke, or as part of coordinated post-hospital care following a spinal cord or brain injury. It's equally relevant after a new diagnosis of a progressive condition like Parkinson's or MS, where early, structured therapy helps maintain function for longer. Families often notice the signs before anyone formally flags them declining balance, frequent stumbles, or near-falls at home are all reasons to seek an assessment rather than wait. And if a neurologist or surgeon has already recommended rehabilitation, or if mobility and daily function seem to have plateaued despite everything else being done, that's a clear signal that focused, goal-based therapy is worth starting now rather than later.

What Family Can Do to Support Recovery at Home

But recovery doesn’t only take place during therapy sessions; what you do in-between them plays an important role. a few simple things you do in your home setting could help

Follow the exercise schedule that was provided by the physical therapist even on those days when progress seems to be very slow.

Make your home safer for the person who is recovering by creating walking spaces, putting non-slip mats, installing grab bars in the toilet, and making sure there is good lighting to avoid falls.

Help the individual move around safely but without making all his tasks for him.

Keep an eye on overexertion and make sure the person rests when he needs to rest instead of forcing him to continue.

Go through your routine every day – eating meals, sleeping, and practicing therapy exercises.

Be patient and give time for progress – it is hard and sometimes impossible to see how it is going because neurological recovery is not always linear.

Inform the therapist about new symptoms, pains, and inability to perform some actions right away but don’t wait until the next session.

Take note of the achievements and congratulate the person who makes some progress – no matter how small it may seem.

The method of therapy remains the same – the only difference is the place where it is conducted. Home-based neuro rehabilitation is performed in the environment of a patient’s house which also solves the problem of travelling to a clinic for patients with limited mobility.

It depends on the disease, its severity and regularity of therapy. A realistic estimate of time required for therapy is given after the first assessment based on goals set.

Referral is not necessary, but having the existing diagnosis, discharge note or scan would help developing a more coordinated program of rehabilitation.

Discussion of the diagnosis and patient’s history followed by the assessment of patient’s functional and physical abilities including strength, balance, coordination and mobility – not the fitness test.

Yes, for progressive diseases the aim of therapy is maintaining the current function and slowing down the disease progression and adapting the therapy to it.
